It also features a safety mechanism that locks the needle in place. Once this lock is released using the screw, the compass begins to function. After a short period of operation, the amplitude of the needle’s deflection will decrease until the direction finally stabilises. The compass should be positioned so that the red arrow aligns with true north. Once stabilised, the needle may vibrate slightly. Map readers are accurate compasses used for precisely determining the azimuth of a journey or route. On the inside of the compass, there is a precise angular scale ranging from 0 to 360 degrees, enabling the determination of the azimuth, i.e. the angle between North and the desired location selected on the map. The needle must be locked when not in use. This
