A sextant – a gift for a sailor
Sextant
A sextant is an original decorative item for a study, mantelpiece, yacht or boat, particularly for sailing enthusiasts. Put simply, it is a type of maritime navigation system popular in the 18th century, which allowed a ship’s position at sea to be determined with an accuracy of around one nautical mile. In reality, however, this could be several kilometres. The name derives from ‘sextant’, meaning one-sixth of a circle. A sextant is essentially a precision protractor with a fine scale, equipped with a telescope, a movable arm with a fixed mirror, a movable mirror and a set of filters – to determine their position, sailors also needed special tables. Our sextant is a wonderful gift idea for any sailor or sailing enthusiast.
