It allows you to find any day of the week between the years 1600 and 2799! This is an old system known as Dominical letters – Sunday letters. Renaissance style.
How to use the calendar? Contrary to appearances, the principle of finding dates is simple. Let’s say we want to check what day of the week 2 March 2019 falls on. To do this, we turn the calendar to the page with the moon face. On the movable ring, we find the number 20 and align it with the number 19, which we find on the fixed dial. Next, we move the notch marked ‘Letra Dominical’ to the 19, which allows us to see which letter was beneath the 20 when the 20 and 19 were aligned. In our case, this is the letter F. The next step takes place on the sun face. We position the month of March, marked on the movable ring with the letters MAR, under the F. We then see that the 2nd day of the month – looking now at the lower part of the fixed dial showing the days from 1 to 31 – coincides with the letter S, which means that 2 March 2019 is S – Saturday. In the case of a leap year, you will find two letters in the aperture. In this case, the rule is that the first letter applies to days up to 1 March of that year, and the second to every day after 1 March of that year. The remaining steps are as above. Example: let’s check what day of the week 10 June 2020 falls on. On the moon side, we set the 20 on the movable disc to the 20 on the fixed disc. We use the slotted disc and see that the letters D and E are under 20. We are talking about a date after 15 March, so we take the letter D into account. With this information, we move to the side with the sun face. JUN – June – we place this under D. At the bottom, we see that 10 June is under X – miércoles – Wednesday. The calendar is based on the names of the months and days of the week in Spanish.
